Day of the Dead Art

19 April 06

Dia de los Muertos art is meant to show the duality of life, which is that it can only exist surrounded by death. This is reality, not superstition. The artwork is meant to show this and make it, death, a part of life, to be accepted and acknowledged instead of feared.

My Day of the Dead art is rich with color and tradition, and is used symbolically (cards, canvases, clock, votives, etc.) as well as functionally (goblets, platters, salsa bowls, pastry domes, etc.) to celebrate through food and drink.

As the old Mexican saying goes: “Every day is a dance with death.” So live a life you enjoy, and when the time comes that those you love build altars to celebrate your life on the Day of the Dead, know they are thinking of you and they will join you in their own time.

    1. My son, Ricardo Hernandez, is a High School junior. For his Spanish 5-6 Cultural Research Project he has decided to research and make his first Dia de Los Muertos Altar. My parents ancestry is from Michoacan Mexico where my abuelita still lives so we are familiar with some of the indigenous background of this rich celebration and have enjoyed pan de muerto every year.

For Ricardo, his decision is based on his recent sadness that his 10 1/2 year old cat Frisky has been diagnosed as terminal and is quite frail. The vet didn’t think he would live to October and he will probably pass very soon. Ricardo adopted Frisky as a kitten from a shelter to celebrate his completion of kinder so they have really grown up together. Anyway, Ricardo has already sketched Frisky sleeping but would like to do something nice to honor his life. I will refer him to this website which is awesome! I find the art amazing! Anyway, wish Ricardo well and thanks for all the information!!
